Club Rules
Playing chess is really fun, but also hard work! Many of our players study at home, get coaching, and read chess books to improve. They are focused while playing their weekly game at the club. It’s everybody’s job to make sure the playing hall is respectful of all the games in progress.
Respecting St. Andrew’s Church
The good people at St. Andrew’s Church rent their facility to us and it’s our job to treat it with respect. Please clean up after yourself, throw away your trash, flush the toilet, and so on.
Santa Monica Bay Chess Club Policy on Cheating
Commitment to Fair Play
The Santa Monica Bay Chess Club is dedicated to upholding the integrity of chess as a game of skill, strategy, and sportsmanship. In alignment with the United States Chess Federation (USCF) rules, we strictly prohibit any form of cheating, including but not limited to the use of electronic devices, external assistance, or collusion between players. This policy outlines our commitment to fostering a fair and respectful environment for all members and the measures we take to prevent and address cheating in our tournaments and club activities.
Prohibited Behaviors and Tools
Cheating in any form undermines the spirit of chess and will not be tolerated. Prohibited actions include using chess engines, software, or electronic devices (e.g., smartphones, smartwatches, or earpieces) during games to gain an unfair advantage. Players are also forbidden from receiving move suggestions or analysis from spectators, other players, or external sources during a game. Collusion, such as prearranging game outcomes or deliberately losing to manipulate standings, is strictly prohibited. All players must adhere to USCF Rule 20C, which bans the use of notes, electronic devices, or other aids during play unless explicitly permitted by the tournament director for medical or other approved reasons.
Preventive Measures and Monitoring
To prevent cheating, Santa Monica Bay Chess Club implements several safeguards in accordance with USCF guidelines. Electronic devices must be turned off and stored away from the playing area during games, as outlined in USCF Rule 20D. Tournament directors and arbiters will conduct random inspections of players and their belongings to ensure compliance. Spectators are prohibited from communicating with players during games, and designated playing areas will be monitored to minimize distractions and opportunities for misconduct.
Enforcement and Consequences
Violations of this anti-cheating policy will result in swift and appropriate action, following USCF rules and club discretion. Suspected cheating will be investigated by the tournament director or a designated ethics committee, with evidence such as unusual move patterns, witness testimony, or device usage considered. Penalties may include forfeiture of the game, expulsion from the tournament, suspension from club activities, or a permanent ban, depending on the severity of the offense (USCF Rule 21). Players found cheating may also be reported to the USCF for further disciplinary action. Appeals may be submitted in writing within seven days, but the club’s decision, based on fair evaluation, will be final. Our goal is to maintain a cheating-free environment that honors the principles of chess and ensures an enjoyable experience for all members.
