François-André Danican Philidor (Sept)
3 Tuesday evenings (Sept 2nd, 9th, 16th) Swiss System, 4-5 sections:
(G/90+10) Cash prizes (based on entries).
François-André Danican Philidor – Widely regarded as the best chess player of his age; his book Analyse du jeu des Échecs was considered a standard chess manual for at least a century. A chess opening, an endgame position, and a checkmate method are all named after him. For a time Philidor was among the leading opera composers in France. When pawns were generally considered expendable as bait for gambits, Philidor understood very well modern concepts like the power of passed pawns, bad and good pieces, space advantage, open files, pawn structure and the importance of the center.
