Anatoly Karpov Tournament
Begins May 5th, 2026 and lasts four weeks.
Games are every Tuesday at 7PM.
Anatoly Karpov was a titan of efficiency and the twelfth World Chess Champion, reigning with unmatched dominance from 1975 to 1985. Renowned for his “boa constrictor” style, Karpov excelled at prophylactic play, neutralizing opponent plans before they even materialized. His mastery of endgame technique and positional squeezing redefined strategic excellence.
Through a career spanning decades, he secured over 160 first-place tournament finishes, cementing his status as one of the most successful competitive players in history. Karpov’s deep understanding of harmony and structure remains a foundational study for modern grandmasters.

- Time Control: G90+10 sec increment.
- Cash prizes: based on entries.
- Entry Fee: (cash at front desk or Venmo @smbchess)
- $20 – Club members
- $35 – Non-club members
- $0 – First time players
- $0 – Over 2000 USCF (entry fee deducted from prizes)
- Annual Club Membership: Adults $75 / year, Juniors $20 / year.
- Registration: 7-7:10 p.m. Rds: 7:10-11:00 p.m.
